Jozef (Jos) H.M. Hupperetz

Mr. Jozef Hupperetz has longstanding experience in the field of customs. He started his career as a junior inspector in the Dutch customs administration in 1980 in the Port of Rotterdam. He worked for the Dutch Customs more than 16 years at senior advisory positions in the operational customs service and three years at the Ministry of Finance as policy advisor in the Directorate of Customs Legislation and Policy.

In 1999 he started to work for the European Commission, as policy advisor responsible for various files: customs controls and the common risk management framework; cooperation project with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection; business process modelling of customs processes for the Union Customs Code and inspector for traditional own resources.

In July 2017 he was appointed as advisor for customs and indirect tax matters in the Task Force for the Preparation and Conduct of the Negotiations with the United Kingdom under Article 50 TEU. As Senior Expert he continued the negotiations and coordinated the implementation of the Ireland and Northern Ireland Protocol and finally the Windsor Framework.

Since 1 January 2024, he retired from active duty of the European Commissions’ Directorate General for Taxation and Customs Union.
